What is acupuncture?

  • Acupucture on the face can help sinusitis and allergies.

Acupuncture dates back thousands of years and involves inserting fine needles into points on the body.

The focus is on treating the person as a whole, not just treating a symptom.

The body consists of many channels of energy (or Qi) which flows in a similar way to blood. When there is stress, illness or injury this energy flow is interrupted which then causes health problems.

By inserting fine needles the body can redress the flow of Qi allowing the circuit to flow again and health to be restored.

What does acupuncture help with?

There are many conditions and symptoms that acupuncture can help with. The NHS and NICE currently welcome acupuncture for conditions such as lower back pain and headaches.

Please feel free to contact me and discuss on the phone, or pop into the clinic and see if it can help you.

What happens in treatment?

Prior to treatment you will be asked about your symptoms and medical history, plus some other questions about your sleep and so on which allows a full diagnosis to be made so treatment can be tailored to you. The practitioner will also look at your tongue and feel your pulse which are both important diagnostic tools in Chinese Medicine.

Fine needles are inserted a few millimetres into the skin at specific points and left in for around 20 minutes. All needles are pre-packed, sterilised and disposable.  Acupuncture with a qualified and experienced practitioner is safe.

What does acupuncture feel like?

The needles are so fine that they are barely felt upon insertion. Sometimes a dull ache or tingling can be felt once the needle is in. This is normal. Patients have reported feeling tired or relaxed during treatment. Some feel energised after treatment and some feel they need to take it easy for a few hours.

Many patients find that they sleep better following treatment and pain can decrease.

How much treatment do I need?

Everyone is different and so it is best to call and have a quick chat to see if acupuncture might work for you. Some patients need 6 weekly sessions  and some find they continue treatment for months. 6 weeks of weekly sessions is recommended to start with and improvement may well be seen within this time.

Acupuncture awareness

The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) has an Acupuncture Awareness week in February and last year the focus was on sleep problems and insomnia, with Toyah Willcox lending her voice as someone who has found relief with acupuncture treatment for years.

As of 2009 the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recommends acupuncture for lower back pain, and in September 2012 announced it also recognises the benefits of acupuncture for migraine and tension type headaches.
