What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture dates back thousands of years and involves inserting fine needles into points on the body.

The focus is on treating the person as a whole, not just treating a symptom.

The body consists of many channels of energy (or Qi) which flows in a similar way to blood. When there is stress, illness or injury this energy flow is interrupted which then causes health problems.

By inserting fine needles the body can redress the flow of Qi allowing the circuit to flow again and health to be restored.

Qualified Acupuncturist

I studied Traditional Chinese Medicine and Five Element Acupuncture for three years at The College of Integrated Chinese Medicine in Reading, qualifying in 2002. I subsequently practiced alongside GPs, osteopaths and homeopaths in Wiltshire and North Yorkshire for eight years then practiced overseas for two years.
I have seen improvement in a variety of individuals who have had treatment for problems as diverse as loss of voice, chronic cystitis, tennis elbow, migraines and depression.
I also use cupping, moxibustion and am fully qualified with NADA-UK as an acupuncture detoxification specialist. Ear acupuncture is used in this instance for detoxification, addiction and stress or trauma.

I recently took a course in the use of acupuncture for the treatment of sports injuries.

Cupping

This is an ancient technique found in many cultures. It utilizes vacuum suction within glass cups to move localised congestion from injury or illness. A vacuum is created within the cup using a lighted taper and the cup is placed upon the skin. It is held on by suction and is commonly used on the back for common colds and back ache or injury. It is completely safe and causes a pleasant sensation, but can leave some painless circular temporary bruising.

Moxibustion

This is the use of a dried herb to warm an area on the skin and move or warm the Qi where there is congestion or pain or cold. A small cone of the herb (mugwort) is placed on the skin or the end of an inserted needle, lit and allowed to smoulder slowly then removed. It can help enormously with lower back pain. A moxa stick is sometimes used around the area instead.

Detoxification and Addiction

Using ear acupuncture can assist with the process of detoxification and also addiction. Very short needles are inserted into six specific points within each ear and left in for 20-30 minutes while the patient relaxes. This usually requires a frequent and regulated course of treatment, often in conjunction with counselling or lifestyle changes.

It is also very effective in the support of those receiving treatment for cancer and also individuals with PTSD and sleep disturbance.
